Board-Certified Dermatologist in Columbia, SC

Gap Year Program

For Future Medical, PA, and Healthcare Students

Build clinical skills. Learn the reasoning behind the care. Prepare for what comes next.

Spend your gap year working alongside the clinical team at Capital Skin & Laser, a physician-owned dermatology practice in Columbia’s Vista district. This full-time, paid position offers hands-on patient care experience in a practice whose expertise spans medical dermatology, Mohs surgery and reconstruction, scar rehabilitation, and advanced laser and cosmetic treatments.

You’ll contribute to daily patient care while developing the knowledge, judgment, and professional habits that will serve you throughout your healthcare career.

What You’ll Experience

With training and supervision, responsibilities and learning opportunities may include:

  • Preparing patients for visits, gathering medical histories, and setting up treatment rooms
  • Learning medical scribing, clinical documentation, and electronic medical record workflows
  • Supporting clinicians during examinations and procedures
  • Observing Mohs surgery, reconstruction, scar treatments, and laser and cosmetic procedures
  • Learning dermatologic terminology, common diagnoses, and treatment approaches
  • Supporting patient instructions, follow-up, and coordination of care

Responsibilities will reflect your training, demonstrated competency, and the needs of the practice.

Learn Alongside Expertise

Work alongside Dr. Leah Spring and our clinical team, with exposure to an approach shaped by military medicine, complex skin cancer surgery, scar rehabilitation, teaching, and published research.

Education is part of how we practice. We encourage questions and want you to understand why a treatment is chosen, how a procedure works, and what thoughtful patient care requires—from clinical decisions to the way we explain them.

Who Should Apply?

Motivated individuals who have completed their undergraduate education and are considering or actively preparing for graduate-level healthcare training.

This program may be an especially good fit for students planning to pursue:

  • Medical school
  • Physician assistant programs
  • Nursing programs
  • Other advanced healthcare degrees

We’re looking for people who are intellectually curious, dependable, attentive to detail, and comfortable taking an active role on a busy team. You should welcome feedback, follow through on responsibilities, and bring as much care to preparing a room as you do to learning a procedure.
